We are getting closer and closer to 93.9 The Beats Summer Jam (so you should probably get your tickets here)! To celebrate that, we have some facts and knowledge for you regarding the headliners Naughty By Nature!
1. They Started Out As “The New Style”
In the beginning they weren’t so naughty, nor were they in tune with nature. The group had a quick rise with a single by the name of “Scuffin Those Knees” and were quickly signed to a label. The group was taken under the wing of Queen Latifah and changed their name to the one we now know and love.
2. They Won The First Grammy For Best Rap Album And Beat Tupac, ODB, and Bone Thugz!
In 1995 Naughty By Nature won the first grammy ever to be awarded for best rap album. What’s more impressive is that the album, Poverty’s Paradise, did not contain either of their biggest hits “OPP” or “Hip Hop Hooray”. The win came over Tupac’s Me Against The World which contained “So Many Tears” and “Dear Mama” ODB’s Return To The 36 Chambers, and perhaps the biggest upset, Bone Thugz and Harmonies E 1999 Eternal. Given the influence those albums would have in later years, it’s a huge feather in the NBN cap.
3. OPP Stands For “Other Peoples P****”
Yeah really crude I know. I’m sure a lot of people reading already know this, but OPP is about convincing other people to cheat on your or their lover with you. It’s such a happy beat! I won’t judge you if you didn’t know!
4. They Were The First Rap Group To Perform At Fenway Park
Boston’s beloved baseball stadium had hosted many acts throughout the years, but it wasn’t until 2011 they hosted their first rap group. Naughty By Nature was the first rap group to ever perform in the stadium and did so as a part of the New Kids On The Block/Backstreet Boys tour.
