Today in Rock History – June 2

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s June 2nd and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

A much slower day compared to yesterday, we still got some great releases, including Live and Dangerous from Thin Lizzy and Darkness on the Edge of Town from Springsteen on the same day in 1972.

We also got A Kind of Magic from Queen in 1986, Adore from the Smashing Pumpkins in 1998, It’s a Shame About Ray from The Lemonheads in 1992 and But Here We Are from the Foo Fighters in 2023!

Moving into birthdays now, we have Matt Kean of Bring Me the Horizon, Dez Cadena of Black Flag, Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones, and Fabrizio Moretti of The Strokes!

We lost Vince Welnick of The Tubes and the Grateful Dead in 2006 from suicide. He was 55.

In 1989, Bill Wyman, 52, marries 18-year-old Mandy Smith. The 15 minute ceremony took place at a registry office in Suffolk, England. There were only two witnesses for the marriage: Mandy’s sister and Bill’s twenty-something son. Oh, did I forget to mention that they started dating when Mandy was only THIRTEEN?! Gross. The marriage would only last nine months. This song seems fitting to place here.

And finally in 2005, Alex Kapranos, lead singer of Franz Ferdinand, was detained by Russian police at an airport in Moscow after being suspected as a spy. Kapranos, who was traveling under his real name Alex Huntley, was accused of being an MI6 agent there to steal info about Russia’s weaponry. Huntley pointed out that actual former MI6 agent Richard Tomlinson used the surname while working undercover in the 90s. Alex also stated the man they were looking for was 13 years older. Kapranos was freed after the altercation.
