Starting off on a high note as it’s the Spaceman Ace Frehley’s birthday!
Other birthdays include Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, Kate Pierson of The B-52’s, and Rob Coombes of Supergrass!
We have three releases today: When Legends Rise by Godsmack in 2017, American Fool from John Cougar in 1982 and Open Up and Say… Ahh! from Poison in 1988.
In 2009, Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament and a band employee were robbed at knifepoint outside the Southern Tracks Recording Studio in Atlanta. The robbers, emerging from the woods behind the studio wearing black masks, smashed the windows of the Jeep that Ament had rented. They made out with a BlackBerry phone, Ament’s passport and $3,000 cash along with $4,320 worth of goods.
That very same day Aerosmith held a free concert in Hawaii after being threatened with legal action from fans after they claimed the band cancelled a sold-out show in Maui two years prior and left them with no refunds in favor of another show in Chicago. The band agreed to perform and would pay all expenses. Anyone who bought tickets for the original show date got a free ticket too.
In 2003, Iggy Pop reunited with The Stooges after 30 years to close Coachella.
Legendary San Francisco rock venue Fillmore Auditorium reopened in 1994, with a performance by The Smashing Pumpkins
In 2023, Metallica launched their M72 tour in Amsterdam. Each stop on the tour featured a weekend of two shows with different setlists.
And finally in 1976, David Bowie is detained on a train by Polish-Russian border custom officers after they find Nazi books and mementos in his luggage. Bowie claimed that they were for his research for a film about Joseph Goebbels. Bowie was released a few hours later.
