Today in Rock History – April 9

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s April 9th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting off with birthdays shout-outs to Andy Nicholson of the Arctic Monkeys, Albert Hammond Jr of The Strokes, and Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance

In 2004, the parents of “Weird Al” Yankovic die due to accidental carbon-monoxide poisoning after using their fireplace with a closed flue.

Also in 2004, Vince Neil of Motley Crue pleaded no contest to battery charges after a sex worker at the Moonlight Bunny Ranch (a legal brothel in Nevada) accused Neil of assaulting her. Neil was sentenced to a 30-day jail suspension, 60 days of anger management, and was fined $1,000.

In 1994, Pearl Jam visits the White House and meet President Clinton. While there the band pushes for reform to rein in Ticketmaster. Clinton on the other hand, seeks help from the band to craft a statement on the passing of Kurt Cobain.

In 1997, Soundgarden announces that they were breaking up. It last only 13 years.

Ya know what? Screw it! We lost DMX on this day in 2021.

In 1989, Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones, who was 52 at the time, announces his upcoming marriage to Mandy Smith, aged 19. Wyman said that the couple had been dating for six years.

And finally in 1973, Queen played a showcase gig for their new record label EMI at The Marquee London.
