Today in Rock History – April 6

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s April 6th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting off with releases, and we’ve got just one: Undertow by Tool

Just one birthday today and that belongs to Black Francis of The Pixies

In 1968, Syd Barrett leaves Pink Floyd due to poor mental health from drug use.

Sticking with Floyd, in 1987, Roger Waters’ lawyers issued a statement claiming that Waters believed he was the main driving force on the creative direction of the band and therefore, he would contest the use of the name. This would be against anyone and even former bandmates.

In 1974, the California Jam 1 festival takes place in Ontario, California. Artists featured on the bill included Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and the Eagles.

In 1971, The Rolling Stones launch their own record label, Rolling Stones Records, with the help of Atlantic Records.

And finally in 1980, Andrew Wood forms the band Malfunkshun in Seattle, WA. This would be considered the starting point of the grunge movement! Malfunkshun’s music would come to influence Wood’s roommate to start his own band. The roommate? Chris Cornell. The band? Soundgarden.
