Today in Rock History – March 14

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s March 14th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

It’s a rarity of a day as there are no major releases, no major birthdays, and no major deaths (which that last one is a good thing, right?). But there is a lot of major gigs and even a band formation to talk about.

Starting off in 1982, Metallica made their live debut performing at Radio City in Anaheim, California. The first song they play: Hit the Lights.

In 1991 R.E.M. play the first of two secret gigs at a tiny London venue called Borderline to promote their seventh album, Out of Time. The name they used to keep the secret gig a secret? Bingo Hand Job.

In 1981, Black Flag play the Peppermint Lounge in NYC. The audience includes all three members of what would become the Beastie Boys, Thurston Moore who would later form Sonic Youth, and Henry Rollins who would take over as Black Flag’s lead singer later that year.

And finally in 1983, Bon Jovi form in Sayreville, New Jersey.
