Today in Rock History – March 10

Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s March 10th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Kicking it off with releases today, we there’s Chris Cornell’s Scream from 2009, Black and White Rainbows by Bush from 2017 and the debut effort of The Presidents of the United States of America in 1995. Cue the song that’s clearly about fruit and NOTHING ELSE!

It’s a big day for birthdays today! We’ve got Breaking Benjamin’s namesake Benjamin Burnley, Jerry Horton of Papa Roach and two members of Pearl Jam: their first drummer, Dave Krusen and longtime bassist Jeff Ament (who was also in Temple of the Dog)!

Also on this day in 1991, the band known as Mookie Blaylock announced on a Seattle radio station that they would be changing their name to Pearl Jam.

Today is also the legendary producer Rick Rubin’s birthday. I could list all the greats Rubin has worked with but we’d be here all day. So here’s Rick talking about his time working with System of a Down and helping create Chop Suey.

In 1984, the Mark II lineup of Deep Purple reunite, which included guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and lead singer Ian Gillian. Gillian had just left Black Sabbath that day.

And finally, in 1977 The Sex Pistols sign with A&M Records after leaving EMI over the band’s bad behavior. A&M hold a public signing ceremony in front of Buckingham Palace and afterward host a party, with drinks, at the label’s offices. Mayhem soon followed as members of the band got a little rambunctious. Johnny Rotten verbally abused the staff, while Sid Vicious smashed a toilet bowl. Two days later, the Pistols got in a fight at a club and Rotten threatened the life of a record exec. The band and A&M parted ways just a week later on March 16th as A&M terminated the band’s contract.
