Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s January 1st and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!

Starting the day in 1964, as Top of the Pops, the British pop music TV show premiered. Acts for the first show included The Hollies and The Rolling Stones. The show would continue for many decades and ended it’s regular run in 2006.
Sticking with TV for a minute as in 1967, The Doors made their live TV debut on Shebang by performing (lip-synching) their first single Break on Through.
With releases, we got The Tragically Hip EP from The Tragically Hip in 1987 and Eric Clapton’s Backless in 1978

In 1989, Nirvana signed a 1-year recording contract with the Seattle based Sub Pop Records. The contract led to the creation of the band’s debut record Bleach.
In 1977, the UK’s first ever punk venue, The Roxy Club celebrated it’s opening night with The Clash headlining.
In a tweet from 2010, Chris Cornell announced that Soundgarden, who have been broken up since 1997, would be getting back together.
And finally in 1990, Florida radio station WKRL became the first “All Zeppelin” format radio station, celebrating by playing Stairway to Heaven for 24 hours straight. The Zep format would last for two weeks before the station became a more traditional Classic Rock station while also changing their call letters to WXTB.
