Matt Sorum says the story of Velvet Revolver still feels unfinished.
Speaking in a recent interview, the former Guns N’ Roses drummer reflected on the band he formed in the early 2000s with Slash and Duff McKagan. He said Velvet Revolver had the momentum, the songs, and the audience to reach the same heights as Guns N’ Roses, but the group did not stay together long enough to fully realize that potential.
Velvet Revolver debuted in 2004 with Contraband, which quickly climbed the charts and produced several radio hits. The lineup, which included frontman Scott Weiland, brought together established names from the rock world at a time when hard rock was regaining mainstream attention. Sorum noted that the chemistry was strong and the response from fans was immediate.
Still, internal tensions and changes within the band slowed that rise. By 2008, the group had effectively disbanded.
Looking back, Sorum’s comments frame the band as a project that burned bright and moved fast, but ultimately ran out of time before it could match the legacy of his earlier success.
