Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s September 23rd and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!
Starting off the day strong with The Boss Bruce Springsteen’s birthday!
It’s also Neal Smith of the Alice Cooper band’s and the late CBGB owner Hilly Kristal’s birthdays! Without CBGB, we wouldn’t have many punk and new wave groups of the 70s and 80s like the Ramones, Patti Smith Group, and the Talking Heads!
Moving onto releases, we have Results May Vary from Limp Bizkit in 2003!
Other releases include both Santana’s Abraxas and Idlewild South by The Allman Brothers Band in 1970, Frank Zappa’s You Are What You Is in 1981, Steely Dan’s Aja in 1977 and Parallel Lines from Blondie in 1978!
In 1969, Northern Illinois University’s student newspaper Northern Star publishes a story that Paul McCartney had died three years prior in a car crash and has since been replaced by a lookalike. This would spark one of rock’s biggest and more well know conspiracy theories, even causing the then seclusive McCartney to come out and say the report was false. Or was it? DUN DUN DUUUUNNNN!
We lost Robert Hunter of the Grateful Dead in 2019
And finally in 1980, Bob Marley played what would be his final concert at Stanley Theatre in Pittsburgh, PA. Two days prior Marley collapsed while jogging in Central Park in NYC. Although he was told to stop touring, Marley flew to Pittsburgh for one more show. Marley collapsed during the 20-song set with the Wailers and he would die a year later from an aggressive form of cancer. The show was later released as a live album in 2011, titled Live Forever
