Are you ready to learn some stuff? It’s September 20th and here’s what happened Today in Rock History!
Starting the day off with releases, we got AC/DC’s Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap in 1976
and Ozzy’s solo debut Blizzard of Ozz in 1980!
We also got Love Over Gold by Dire Straits in 1982, Billy Idol’s Whiplash Smile in 1986, Kansas’ Masque in 1975 and both Have a Nice Day by Bon Jovi and Ten Thousand Fists from Disturbed in 2005!
On to birthdays, we have Chuck and John Panozzo of Styx, Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme, Rick DeJesus of Adelitas Way and Ben Shepherd of Soundgarden
In 1968, Led Zeppelin (still known as The Yardbirds at the time), began recording what would become Zeppelin 1.
In 1970, Jim Morrison was acquitted on open profanity charge in Miami, FL but he would be found guilty for an indecent exposure charge from a year earlier. The charges would be appealed, but Morrison would never stand trial as he would die in France in 1971.
We lost singer-songwriter Jim Croce in a plane crash on this day in 1973. He was 30.
We also lost the namesake for Lynyrd Skynyrd, Leonard Skinner in 2010
And finally in 1979, while performing at The Palladium in NYC, Clash bassist Paul Simonon grew frustrated with the sitting crowd, then smashed his bass on stage. The moment was captured on film and the photo was used as cover art for their album, London Calling.
